Tesla is currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Staff Materials Engineer to support our Solar Roof product line. You will be responsible for identifying, developing, evaluating, and qualifying materials needed for current and next generations of Solar Roof. Other responsibilities include driving engineering tradeoffs, including aesthetics, lifetime, cost, manufacturing process, installation ease, and product features. Materials include decorative coatings, interlayer, adhesive materials, substrates, structural plastics, etc.
Identify and conduct evaluation of material candidates, such as decorative coatings, interlayers, adhesives, plastics, etc., working closely with design team and optical engineering team.
Carry out materials characterization and performance evaluation by conducting analytical studies and collaborating with process/reliability teams.
Write materials specifications.
Engage with and manage external partners and vendors for materials development and drive to successful realization in production.
Develop and evaluate improved and optimized composition.
Develop novel methods for polymer processing, compounding, molding, extrusion, casting.
Determine process parameters for manufacturing processes of polymeric materials.
Perform stress testing and reliability testing on materials and components.
5+ years practical experience directly related coatings, adhesives, plastics development is preferred. Experience in solar industry is a plus.
B.S/M.S./Ph.D. in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Polymer Engineering is preferred.
